Borussia Dortmund has secured a new addition for the upcoming season just days before the final matchday of the current Bundesliga campaign.
The club confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that center-back Joane Gadou will join from Austrian Bundesliga side Red Bull Salzburg for the 2026/27 season. The 19-year-old has signed a contract with Dortmund until 2031. He is expected to fill the roster spot left by Niklas Süle, whose contract was not renewed and who will retire after the season.

The transfer fee was not disclosed by the vice-champions, but media reports indicate it amounts to €19.5 million plus up to €4.5 million in bonuses. Gadou was initially developed at Paris Saint-Germain before moving to Austria in 2024.
“We have known Joane for a very long time and have been monitoring him since his time at Paris Saint-Germain,” said sporting director Lars Ricken in the official announcement. “Joane will strengthen our squad and play a key role from the start of the new season. We are convinced of his qualities and see enormous sporting development potential in him.”
Gadou becomes the first transfer completed under new sporting director Ole Book, who succeeded Sebastian Kehl. Book described the defender as a “modern and physically strong center-back” with “good build-up play” who is “extremely fast and still has room for development.” He added, “With his qualities, Joane is an optimal addition to our defense.”
Gadou also shared his excitement in the club statement: “I am thrilled to become part of the BVB family and can’t wait to wear the black and yellow jersey for the first time. Together with my teammates, the entire club, and our incredible fans, I want to be successful in the coming years.”
